When I wrote my bestselling book, "You Unstuck, Mastering the New Rules of Risk-Taking in Work and Life," I worked hard to choose a title that clearly said it was more than another "self help" book. Being able to take risks is, I believe, the only way to create the best life possible. Chapter 11 is all about creating your WOW Career, and it fits perfectly into a discussion on rebranding. How so? Well, who you are, what you do, and how you do it -- especially professionally -- is a huge piece of your brand. Whether you own a business, provide a service or have a more traditional career role within a corporation. The most important thing I have to say about your WOW career (or business) is this: If it's not based on your core values, you'll never get the WOW.
Oh, and your core values may very well change over time. So be prepared to evaluate and re-evaluate what being authentic in your work means to you.
I have shared the tool from Chapter 11 before (Creating Core Values for Your WOW Career) -- see my blog from December 15. What I really want to do now is give you the next steps to help you shift course if that's where you are in your career or business.
I want to get to the bottom of the disconnect between your daily activities and your true purpose, expressed by those values. I call that disconnect the values gap, and the wider it is, the more likely that you’re feeling stuck, frustrated or flat-out miserable in your career. And that, my friends, is when it's time for a brand shift. I know a little about the values gap. Although I enjoyed my time in Hollywood’s C-suite, after nearly two decades working in the entertainment industry, my core value of wanting to “help people learn and grow” overpowered my need to be part of a corporate structure. After my brand shift, and the launch of my company ten years ago, I get the best of both worlds -- helping people learn and grow by coaching senior-level executives within corporations and working with successful entrepreneurs who need help to brand and build their businesses. But it was only by identifying my core values that I was able to figure out what direction to take in my own wow career.
Take a few minutes today, and really look at those core values. Be brutally honest with yourself. This is NOT the dress rehearsal for life, and the one thing none of us can afford is to leave our dreams, and our REAL brand, sitting on a shelf somewhere.
